Nebraska Medicine, U.S. Army team up to employ veterans

Bellevue Leader - 3/30/2017

Nebraska Medicine and the U.S. Army signed an agreement Monday to partner in a program that guarantees new recruits a job interview and possible employment after their service in the Army.

When new soldiers enlist, they will have the option of becoming part of the U.S. Army Partnership for Youth Success Program, which is designed to prepare, train and connect soldiers to future employers.

In signing the agreement, Nebraska Medicine became the first employer in Nebraska and the 634th overall to partner with the Army through the program since it began in 2000.

The program is part of a long-term effort by the Army to help soldiers forge professional relationships with businesses and encourage businesses to look to the Army as a plentiful and reliable recruiting source. The signing was held at Nebraska Medicine-Bellevue.

Capt. Renata Russo, commander for the Army'sKansas City Medical Recruiting Company, said the nation not only owes soldiers a debt of gratitude for serving but also future opportunities as civilians once their tours of duty are over.

"The program provides America's youth with an opportunity to serve their country while they prepare for their future," she said. "This unique program is part of the Army's efforts to partner with the business community and reconnect America with the Army."

Frank Venuto, chief human capital officer at Nebraska Medicine, said the organizations share a need for a trained and educated workforce.

"By joining forces, we say to those who are trained by the Army that you can use your talent at Nebraska Medicine to help heal our patients," he said.

Nationally, the need for health care providers of all types, from nurses to technicians, continues to grow, and shortages already exist for many. Venuto said Nebraska Medicine currently has more than 700 job openings across the organization. The list includes not only direct care but also support positions.
