Rowan: Mental health counselor

Clinton Herald - 6/9/2018

June 09--Eleisha Rowan will start her new job July 1 as a certified mental health counselor with Cornerstone Wellness Center in Clinton. She graduated from Loras College in Dubuque and is a resident of Bellevue. Find out more about her in this week's Meet Your Neighbor.

What made you want to be a mental health counselor?

I was asked that in my interview, too. I enjoy working with people, which sounds very cliche. I like being a part of their journey to become the best version of themselves and to be that guide along the way. I like psychology and I like learning about psychology.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

Seeing people grow, seeing people change and becoming more confident and more fulfilled in their life. I like that process.

What is your day like as a mental health counselor?

It's a mix between seeing clients, preparing for sessions and also documenting sessions. Also, this isn't day to day but another part of the job I do enjoy is addition training.

What do you enjoy about Clinton?

I like the river. It's kind of cool because I'm also from a river town. I'm still learning Clinton. I like Deanna's Java Station. I went there for the first time today. I'm hoping to connect more with the community like other local agencies. I know Dubuque fairly well so I know the agencies and I know other places that help people. I'm not familiar with that here so I would love to create a network here.

What are you currently reading?

I am reading the book "Minimalism." It's a podcast too. I'm a big podcast person. I'm also reading "Letters to a Young Therapist."
