Ground-Breaking, Ribbon-Cutting Set for New Cascade Mental Health Facility

The Chronicle - 4/29/2017

April 29--Despite a slight delay in the construction timeframe of Cascade's new mental health and evaluation treatment center, a scheduled ribbon cutting and groundbreaking ceremony will continue as scheduled on Monday, May 1.

Richard Stride, chief executive officer of Cascade, said the organization's new 22-bed mental health evaluation and treatment center housed near the Port of Centralia is slightly delayed because of permitting from the state, the Department of Health and suggestions made by Construction Review Services.

Originally, the hope was to have the center open by January 2018, but that will likely now take place in either February or March, Stride said.

Stride said there had been no issues of permitting with the city of Centralia, as reported by another media source. Cascade already has the needed permits from the city, and is expecting to receive the other permit by early next week.

Some of the changes suggested by the project architect and Construction Review Services included the addition of firewalls and smoke barriers between the rooms.

Grading work at the site has already begun, but Stride said the ceremonious groundbreaking event will help kick off the process. The community is invited to attend.

"We are excited that things are going as well as they are," Stride said. "Anytime you do any sort of construction there's always these little delays and things you don't think about. ... We are thrilled we will be able to do the ribbon cutting."

Cascade purchased undeveloped property from the Port of Centralia in July 2016 for $403,365.50, known as Lot 20 located near the Port of Centralia office. The lot will house a 23,000-square-foot mental health and evaluation treatment center.

The roughly $8 million facility will provide between 48 and 52 jobs in the county. The goal is to create more psychiatric beds for Lewis County residents.

Cascade officials earlier told The Chronicle about 88 clients are sent out of the county for mental health services each year. The additional beds will allow for more clients to be treated locally.

The facility will contain 16 beds in a locked unit for individuals who are court-ordered to receive mental health treatment and evaluation for a certain amount of time. The other six beds will be in an unlocked unit, where patients can voluntarily admit themselves.

The groundbreaking and ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 12:15 p.m. on Monday, May 1, at 3510 Steelhammer Lane in Centralia. The public is invited to attend.
