Free series puts focus on physical, mental health

Sun - 3/15/2017

How taking care of the body helps one's emotional health will be the subject of a weekly series of presentations that are free and open to the public.

The Learning to Love Yourself series, presented by Sunset Community Health Center, kicks off Thursday at 9 a.m. at the Yuma Main Library, 2951 S. 21st Drive.

The first program in the series will focus on chronic illness and mental health and how effective management of illness or disease can promote emotional well-being.

The series will then continue every Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the library through the end of April.

The series, conducted in English, is similar to the Spanish-language session that the Yuma-based health center already offers in San Luis, Ariz.

Apart from hearing presentations from Sunset staff, participants will be given time to share ideas and experiences among themselves in a setting similar to a support group, said Kenia Zuniga, a Sunset health worker and presenter in the series.

The second session on March 23 will focus on depression and how that condition stems from physical health.

The series will then focus on addictions in the April 6 session, eating disorders and sleep disorders on April 13, managing emotions on April 20 and exercise and emotional health on April 27.

As part of the series, participants will learn the fundamentals of Tai Chi -- a form of exercise that has proven effective in relieving stress and anxiety -- Zumba and Healthy Rhythms, a musical program that promotes relaxation.
